The sea wind blew, gently paving the way for a head of salty curls; the crows cawed, only second to the sound of crashing waves; I looked up and saw shredded cotton strewn over the sky, and a dragon fly’s wings glinted in the sunlight. I closed my eyes and called to mind all the things I was grateful for.

Imbued with newfound peace, I walked around White Town where technicolored houses lined the streets, and luxuriant trees bent inwards to make leafy canopies. Later that day I continued to explore, my eyes greedy for more, when I discovered The Other Pondy, vastly different from my morning’s Prayer Inducing Pondy. Hexagonal lamps aglow with warm light and wooden shuttered villas in mango, peach and pistachio, had morphed into neon signs and stumpy uninspired storefronts. I resolved to return, so I could make my peace with this, and rid my mind of the cognitive dissonance it was experiencing.

I walked briskly, passing shops selling steel buckets and paper cups wholesale, and dodging motorcyclists determined to mow me down – I was searching for a fetching outdoor market that had caught my eye the previous day. I found it and it was splendid – bananas came in 3 colours, there were carts strapped with foot-high piles of herbaceous goodness, and a clutch of flower shops was perfuming the air. I spent a long time there, finding my own pace amidst this controlled chaos. By the end of it I was even rendered immune to the gaping and chortling locals who found my interest in their mundane lives both idiotic and amusing. At night I fitted my hair in local fashion with a string of Arabian jasmine flowers from the market, and enjoyed a solitary dinner, with sea breeze for company.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my fellow travellers better over a protracted breakfast the next morning. We agreed with and challenged each other’s ideas, laughed heartily, and had no awkward silences. They gave me a warm send off, reminding me that the world abounds with wonderful people, and that the door to making new friends is wide open. I left for the austere arms of Auroville, my heart, mind, and spirit more willing than before.
